Resembling a cross between a thistle and a dandelion, wild lettuce has been used as a sedative and painkiller for millennia. In the past, some Indian tribes smoked the plant to induce a mild euphoric dream state. Even today, in France, water distilled from wild lettuce is used as a mild sedative.
It has been found that the milky substance given out by wild lettuce contains Lactucopicrin, lactucic acid, sesquiterpene lactone and lactucin, which have been found to have analgesic activity equal or higher to that of Ibuprofen in mice. Moreover, these active ingredients were also found to have sedative activity.
Yet, wild lettuce does not contain opium, but it has multiple characteristics that are similar to it. Furthermore, it has been found to be very effective in alleviating coughs and providing relief from nervous annoyance and also helpful in promoting sleep and even could be used safely when using other narcotic medications. In addition, it is also not addictive!
Wild lettuce uses
Relieve pain and tension. Wild Lettuce is also named as opium lettuce because of its opiate-like effect. Not only does it reduce pain, it has been known to cause a mild opiate like high. This quality makes it very useful in relieving pain.
Anxiety. Because of its sedative effect, wild lettuce is great for treating anxiety and strong emotions.
Migraines and headaches. It has been shown that wild lettuce reduces the severity and the frequency of migraine headaches.
Insomnia. Wild lettuce has long been used to treat insomnia
Asthma. It has been shown that the herb is responsible for fewer and less severe asthma-related problems.
Mild euphoric. Opium lettuce causes a feeling of mild euphoria very similar to opiates, though it contains no actual opiates. Not only is this completely legal, it provides an effect similar to opiates without altering the results of a drug test.
How to use opium lettuce
The wild lettuce may be taken both as an infusion and tincture.
Infusion: To prepare an infusion with wild lettuce, add one or two teaspoons of the herb’s leaves in a cup of boiling water and allow it to permeate for 10 to 15 minutes. For effective use, this drink may be taken 3 times daily.
Tincture: For best effects, 2 to 4 ml of the tincture prepared with the leaves of wild lettuce may be taken 3 times every day.
